Do you think he sees these figures more as protectors of good or avengers of evil? I assume 6 year old boys buy into the militant role rather than the peacekeeper role.

I agree. At this stage of life, Phil seems to think that the good guys should fight the bad guys simply because bad guys are inherently bad — not to achieve specific strategic goals.
