A couple of weekends ago, the art teacher at Ben’s elementary school did something that seemed audacious yet mild, something logistically complex yet conceptually simple. He draped an enormous hand-sewn quilt over a multi-story play structure, transforming a fun object into a totally different fun object: an “art fort.”

Ben (7) and Sam (8) both loved it, as did many other kids.
Was it art? When I asked the teacher, he said he thought so, and I have no reason to disagree. It seemed to me like a kind of little-kid fort constructed on an adult scale with adult resources.
In any case, it was a remarkable reimagining of a playground by a remarkable teacher.
