The sixth in a series of personal notes focusing on gratitude.

Back in May, Unleashed, the a cappella singing group I was in as a grad student at UW, held its 25th anniversary concert.

In the lead-up to that concert, some founding members of the group discussed various ways to acknowledge the current group for including us in it (which was actually our idea, but which they happily supported and facilitated). As part of that, I drafted a little toast that did not ultimately get used. Here it is.

There’s an old, old song we used to sing called “Loch Lomond.” It’s the one that goes,

You take the high road and I’ll take the low road

And I’ll be in Scotland before you

Where me and my true love will never meet again

On the bonnie, bonnie banks of Loch Lomond

But we aren’t singing that song tonight. Want to know why?

It’s because the opposite of “Loch Lomond” is an Unleashed reunion!

We are so happy that our paths have crossed again. We are so grateful that this group is still here, and still thriving. We are so proud of you for keeping the music alive. Well done!

In these challenging days — with fear, hatred, and heartbreak all around us — we are so thankful for the bonnie, bonnie sounds of Unleashed! Cheers to you all!
