I’m not a regular maker of New Year’s resolutions, but last year I tried to give up coffee. It went about as well as these things usually go. I lasted a couple of months, I think, and then life got harder and I got softer.

There’s no way I’m starting 2026 without coffee. As I write this on January 2nd, I’m already stressed out about the next two weeks (partly due to having had the flu for the previous two weeks), and I will need those morning pick-me-ups as much as ever. Instead I resolve to hug my family members more often this year.

If you know me well, you know that I’m not much of a hugger. Most of the time I’m not in a mood to give or receive hugs. But if that’s what family members want or need from me, I should try harder.

Maybe my first hug of the day should be a prerequisite for my first cup of coffee.
