I posted something close to the following on a friend’s Facebook wall, then decided it was practically a poem.
PARENTING AS A BIOLOGIST
Genetics is real.
Genetics is powerful.
Yet genetics is almost useless as a lens on parenting.
(Unless your kid has a well-studied genetic disorder,
In which case you can read the relevant literature.)
I often think, “This boy is nothing like me OR his mother!”
It’s as if our genes have betrayed us.
But don’t I know better?
Don’t I know, deep down,
My sweet peas are not just Mendelian,
Not just green or yellow,
Not just tall or short?
Don’t I know my main job is
To tend the soil?
